MRL#1 focused on finding the Rules of Manipulation.
MRL#2 studied the theme of composition.
Manipulation Research Laboratory #3: "Tricks & Props"

The third and final MRL took place in Stockholm, Sweden, on March 22-25, 2010, with Jay Gilligan, Wes Peden, Luke Wilson, Erik Åberg, Matias Salmenaho, Ron Beeri and Patrik Elmnert.

Over four days we explored tricks, and the objects we do them with. What habits of creation did we have? What props were good for what things? How does choice of material change the technique?

Using balls, rings and clubs, but also new juggling shapes from RdL [1], and non-juggling objects such as feathers, balloons and live fish [2], we explored concepts and possibilites, documenting the process as we went.

Basically, we juggled like hell for four days and made a LOT of new tricks, patterns and sequences.

This time we are releasing the movies as a download, and are making them Limited Edition by having them available for just one month. The Double-movie download set is one large .zip archive (2.37 GB) consisting of the following two movies [3]:

MRL_3_CLASSROOM.m4v - 2 hours 8 mins, 1.77 GB
Most (no fish, but featuring Wes in the shower and Patrik in his underwear) of the experiments we did are introduced, the results shown, and the process talked through. This is as close as possible to eg going round to Erik's house and having him explain over coffee how he makes tricks step-by-step. Or over tea at Luke's. Or chocolate milk at Jay's.

MRL_3_PRESENTATION.m4v - 1 hour 7 mins, 615.4 MB
What we considered the "best" (most "interesting", most "unexpected", most "useful") material we found was presented in a live show where the process and system was also introduced. This is more of a lecture-demonstration than a "performance", and as such it highlights again what we considered the most important aspects of our juggling.

[3] M4V Format

We have chosen to deliver this material in the M4V videofile format.

M4V is a file container format developed by Apple, and is very close to MP4 format.

Besides Apple iTunes, Apple QuickTime Player, and iOS devices, M4V files can be played with Windows Media Player (included with Windows 7), Media Player Classic, RealPlayer, VLC media player and Nero Showtime (included with Nero Multimedia Suite). It can also be played by the webOS Video Player for use on the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi smartphones, by the Android operating system with its video player, and by the BS Player Pro.

In addition, M4V files can often be recognised and played by other video players simply by changing the file extension from ".m4v" to ".mp4".
